Takanotsume - Takanotsume

Japanese:
Takanotsume - Takanotsume

A deciduous tree of the Araliaceae family (APG classification: Araliaceae). It can reach a height of 12 meters and a diameter of 60 centimeters. Both the trunk and twigs are gray-brown and thorn-free. The leaves are trifoliate, 5-15 centimeters long, with finely serrated leaflets and long stalks 5-12 centimeters long. The flowers bloom in May and June in compound umbels at the ends of short branches, and are pale yellow-green. The fruits are drupes, spherical, about 5 mm in diameter, and ripen to black. A species endemic to Japan, found from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and commonly grows in mountainous areas. The name is said to come from the resemblance of the winter buds to hawk claws, but there is also a theory that it is due to the similarity of the leaves. The wood is used for boxes, ladles, chopsticks, fan ripeness, etc., but it breaks easily. It is also called Imonoki because the wood is as soft as sweet potatoes. The young shoots are eaten as wild vegetables. The genus Takanotsuma is native to Asia and has four species.
