A gear with a tooth profile formed by an involute curve. The effective tooth surfaces of the teeth follow an involute curve originating from the same base circle. This type of gear pair has great practical advantages, such as maintaining correct meshing even if there is a slight error in the mounting center distance, and therefore accounts for almost all gears currently used industrially. An involute tooth profile becomes a straight tooth profile when the rack, i.e., the radius of the gear, is infinite. Therefore, an involute gear can be created by creating a rack with a straight tooth profile and using it as a tool (rack cutter) to perform a cutting motion in the axial direction of the gear while moving it laterally, and matching this with the peripheral speed on the pitch circle circumference to rotate the circular base material. This type of processing method is called the generating gear cutting method. The characteristic of an involute tooth profile is that it can be generated with a rack with a straight tooth profile, allowing high-precision gears to be manufactured.

インボリュート曲線で歯形を構成した歯車。歯の有効歯面が同一基礎円に由来するインボリュート曲線をとる。この歯車の対にあっては，取付中心距離に多少の誤差が生じても正しいかみ合いが保たれるなど実用上大きな利点をもつため，現在工業的に用いられる歯車のほとんどすべてを占める。インボリュート歯形は，ラックすなわち歯車の半径無限大の場合に直線歯形となる。したがって直線歯形のラックをつくり，これを工具（ラックカッター）として歯車の軸方向に切削運動させながら横方向に移動させ，これとピッチ円周上での周速を合わせて円形母材を回転させるとインボリュート歯車ができる。このような加工法を創成歯切り法という。直線歯形のラックで創成できることがインボリュート歯形の特長で，高精度の歯車を製作できる。
