...This is an avunculate phenomenon often seen in connection with matrilineal clan systems, and has been considered important evidence that the Germanic peoples also once had matrilineal clans, but this type of relationship can also occur in patrilineal societies, for example in cases where cross-cousin marriage is institutionalized, in which a man marries his mother's brother's daughter, or in cases where close responsibilities between brothers and sisters persist even after marriage, so it cannot necessarily be seen as simply a "remnant" of the Germanic matrilineal system. Words of the same family, such as Anglo-Saxon sib, Old High German sippa, and Gothic sibja, are used today as terms meaning clans, along with the Celtic word clan (English sib, German Sippe), but their original meaning is unclear. Rather, it is suggested that the Germanic people themselves had words meaning clans, such as Gothic kuni, Old North European and Anglo-Saxon kyn (English kin), and Middle High German künne, which are all derived from the primitive Indo-European root gan, such as Sanskrit ganas, Greek genos, and Latin gens. The word kuning (German König), meaning "king," may have originally meant clan or tribal chief. *Some of the terminology explanations that mention "sibja" are listed below. …
