This Western-style building is located in Akasaka, Minato Ward, Tokyo. In 1872, Tokugawa Shigetsugu, the former lord of the Kii Domain, donated the upper residence and land owned by the domain to the Imperial Family, and in the same year, it was named Akasaka Imperial Villa. After the Imperial Palace burned down in 1873, it was used as a temporary Imperial Palace until 1889. The current building was planned for Emperor Taisho, when he was still Crown Prince. It was designed by Katayama Tokuma and completed in 1909. The architectural style adopted was the Neo-Baroque style, which was common in Western court architecture at the time. The architectural structure, which is made of brick and stone-clad structures reinforced with American-made steel frames in consideration of earthquakes, is noteworthy. The interior is richly decorated with the finest imported furniture and works by leading artists of the time, such as Imaizumi Yusaku, Asai Chu, and Kuroda Seiki. It is currently used as a guest house. It was renovated by Murano Togo in 1974. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
