This is the battle in 1582 (Tensho 10) in which Oda Nobunaga destroyed Takeda Katsuyori of Kai. Katsuyori, who succeeded the Takeda clan after Shingen's death in 1573 (Tensho 1), was defeated by the combined forces of Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Nagashino in 1575, and the Takeda clan began to decline after that. In response, Nobunaga raised an army to pursue the Takeda clan in February 1582, and the main force of Oda Nobutada's army advanced from Kisoguchi and Iwamuraguchi, capturing the castles of Ina one after another. Ieyasu also began an attack from Surugaguchi, and made an ally of Anayama Baisetsu, a member of the Takeda clan. Under these circumstances, Katsuyori, who had marched to Suwa, returned to Shinpu Castle, which he had built the previous year, on February 28, and on March 3, following the advice of Oyamada Nobushige, the lord of the county, he set fire to the castle and headed for Iwadono Castle in Otsuki.
