Smooth muscle

Japanese: 平滑筋 - へいかつきん

〘noun〙 A type of muscle. It has no visible striations. It is the body muscle of invertebrates and the visceral muscle of vertebrates, excluding the cardiac muscle. It is made up of contractile smooth muscle cells and is extremely long. It moves involuntarily. In vertebrates, it is dually innervated by the autonomic nervous system. ⇔ Striated muscle. *Air Head (1967) by Shizuo Fujieda: "It is the afferent transmission of sensations caused by contraction of smooth muscles, such as labor pains."
