When n is 0 or a positive integer, a second-order linear differential equation is called a Legendre differential equation, and its solution is generally called the nth -order Legendre function. When m is a positive integer, the ordinary differential equation obtained by expanding (1) is called a Legendre associated differential equation, and its solution is called an associated Legendre function. (Each of the differential equations and their respective solution functions above can also be defined with n and m as any complex number, but in this article, n and m are integers, n ≧ 0, m > 0.)
