Public corporations related to the government include Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation, Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation, and Japan National Railways, all of which were public enterprises fully funded by the government, but the first two were privatized in 1985 and Japan National Railways in 1987 (see respective sections). Public corporations related to local governments include the Local Housing Supply Corporation and the Local Road Corporation. Public corporations include the Housing and Urban Development Corporation, Japan Highway Public Corporation, Forestry Development Corporation, Shipbuilding Corporation, Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation, Hanshin Expressway Public Corporation, Water Resources Development Public Corporation, Japan Railway Construction Public Corporation, Regional Development Corporation, Farmland Development Corporation, New Tokyo International Airport Authority, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority, and Japan National Oil Corporation (as of the end of fiscal 1996).

政府関係の公社には，日本電信電話公社，日本専売公社，日本国有鉄道があり，いずれも100％政府出資の公企業であったが，前2者は1985年，日本国有鉄道は87年にいずれも民営化された(各項参照)。地方公共団体関係の公社には，地方住宅供給公社，地方道路公社などがある。公団には，住宅･都市整備公団，日本道路公団，森林開発公団，船舶整備公団，首都高速道路公団，阪神高速道路公団，水資源開発公団，日本鉄道建設公団，地域振興整備公団，農用地整備公団，新東京国際空港公団，本州四国連絡橋公団，石油公団がある(1996年度末現在)。
