Also called land transportation insurance. Insurance that compensates for damages incurred by accidents during transportation of cargo transported on land, rivers, or lakes, or cargo transported domestically by air. In the broad sense, transportation insurance also includes cargo insurance (marine cargo insurance), which compensates for damages incurred to the cargo itself during ocean transportation, and air transportation insurance, which compensates for damages incurred during air transportation. This transportation insurance broadens the concept of land to include not only land but also rivers, lakes, and the air, and compensates for damages to cargo and transportation equipment caused by accidents there, such as derailment, capsizing, crashing, fire, collision, sinking, and theft. This insurance also has many things in common with marine cargo insurance, and when transportation involves both sea and land, marine cargo insurance and (land) transportation insurance are treated as marine insurance together. Insurance for accidents that affect the life or physical safety of passengers, even if the accident occurs during transportation, is not transportation insurance, but life insurance or accident insurance, and the insurance that airlines and railway companies take out to compensate passengers is liability insurance.

陸上運送保険ともいう。陸上，河川，湖沼を輸送される貨物，または国内を航空機で輸送される貨物が輸送中に偶然の事故によって損害をこうむった場合に，その損害を填補する保険。広義の運送保険には，貨物の海上輸送中に貨物自体に生じた損害を填補する積荷保険 (貨物海上保険) ，航空輸送中に生じた損害を填補する航空運送保険も含まれる。この運送保険は陸上の概念が広げられていて，陸上だけでなく河川，湖沼，空中も含められ，そこでの貨物と輸送用具の事故，すなわち脱線，転覆，墜落，火災，衝突，沈没，盗難などによる損害が填補される。またこの保険はその性格上貨物海上保険と共通するところが多く，輸送が海陸にわたる場合には貨物海上保険と (陸上) 運送保険は一括して海上保険として扱われる。運送中に生じる事故であっても旅客の生命，身体に関して生じる事故についての保険は運送保険ではなく，生命保険ないし傷害保険であり，航空会社や鉄道会社が旅客に賠償するために加入する保険は賠償責任保険である。
