Giji (English spelling) yi-er; i-êrh

Giji (English spelling) yi-er; i-êrh
A type of private soldier of warlords in China, mainly during the Five Dynasties period. Yiji means adopted child. They were also called 'Yizi' or 'Provisional Child'. During the Five Dynasties period, each military governor established a fictitious parent-child relationship to stabilize his own ruling position, and this was very popular at the time. Li Keyong's Yizi army of the Later Tang Dynasty was known for its large number and bravery. The establishment of the parent-child relationship was confirmed by the exchange of sake cups. There were also emperors who were born of Yizi, and the most famous of these are Mingzong, who succeeded Li Keyong's son Zhuangzong, and Shizong of the Later Zhou Dynasty (→ Chai Rong), who is said to be the greatest ruler of the Five Dynasties period.
