A medieval Sunni Islamic dynasty in the eastern Caucasus. Taking advantage of the chaos of the Abbasid Caliphate, the Arab Haytham established the Mazyad dynasty in 861, and was the first to use the title Shirvan Shah. It was followed by the Keslanid dynasty (1067/68-1382) of Muhammad bin Yazid, a descendant of the Iranian Sassanid dynasty, and the Darband dynasty (1382-1538) of Sheikh Ibrahim. The capital was originally Shamakha, and later Baku. It was destroyed by the Iranian Shiite Safavid dynasty. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
