Chemical formula: NaAlH 4 . Like the corresponding lithium salt, it probably has the structure tetraaluminum hydride. It is prepared by reacting sodium hydride (NaH) with aluminum in a stream of hydrogen. It has almost the same reducing power as lithium aluminum hydride, but is expensive and therefore rarely used. It reduces esters to aldehydes. It is soluble in tetrahydrofuran and glyme (1,2-dimethoxyethane). When heated to 220 °C in nitrogen, it decomposes to produce Na 3 AlH 6 .
