554‐639 He was a Chinese official in the early Tang Dynasty and famous for being an anti-Buddhist advocate. He was from Xiangzhou (Anyang County, Hebei Province). He became a Taoist scholar in the Northern Zhou Dynasty, served Yang Liang, King of Han, during the Sui Dynasty, as a Taoist priest, and became Grand Historian during the reign of Emperor Gaozu of the Tang Dynasty. In 621 (4th year of Wude), he presented the Eleven Articles on Temples, Pagodas, Monks, and Nuns, which caused back and forth debate from both the Buddhist and Taoist religious communities, but his petitions, which he submitted seven times, influenced Emperor Gaozu's policy of reorganizing the religious communities. However, shortly after the imperial decree for the purge was issued, Emperor Gaozu abdicated due to the Xuanwu Gate Incident, and the decree was never implemented.
