Differential transformer

A differential transformer is a moving-iron type electromagnetic induction converter that converts displacement into AC electromotive force, and consists of a primary coil, two sets of secondary coils, and an iron core. The figure shows a structure that is widely used in coaxial differential transformers. The center of the bobbin is the primary coil L _in , and both sides are secondary coils, L ₁ and L ₂ , which are connected with opposite polarity. When the primary coil is excited with a constant AC voltage e _in , the iron core is magnetized, and the alternating magnetic flux induces an AC voltage in the secondary coil. This voltage is determined by the relative position of the iron core. If the iron core is in the center of the bobbin, the voltages e ₁ and e ₂ induced in both secondary coils are equal, and the output is 0 due to the differential connection. If the iron core is to the right of the center of the bobbin, the voltage induced in coil L ₁ is greater than that of coil L ₂ , and if the iron core is to the left, the opposite is true, and the phase is also shifted by 180 degrees.

差動変圧器は変位を交流起電力に変換する可動鉄片型電磁誘導変換器で，一次コイル，2組の二次コイルおよび鉄心からなる。図は同軸型の差動変圧器で広く用いられている構造である。ボビンの中央を一次コイルL_inとし，両側は二次コイルでそのL₁,L₂は互いに逆極性に接続する。一次コイルを一定交流電圧e_inで励磁すると，鉄心は磁化され，その交番磁束が二次コイルに交流電圧を誘起させる。その電圧は鉄心の相対位置によって決まり，鉄心がボビン中央にあれば両二次コイルに誘起される電圧e₁,e₂は等しく，差動接続により出力は0，鉄心がボビンの中央より右にあればコイルL₁に誘起される電圧はコイルL₂より大きくなり，鉄心が左によればこれと逆で，位相も180度かわっている。
