Ittoen - Ittoen

Japanese: 一灯園 - いっとうえん
Ittoen - Ittoen
A common name for the Confession Service Kosenrin Foundation. A religious and training organization founded by Nishida Tenka (1872-1968). As a young man, Tenka was troubled by the labor-management conflicts in his business, and in search of a way to live without fighting, he fasted in his hometown of Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, and after attaining enlightenment, he began a life of gezagyo and service. Gradually, sympathizers gathered, and in 1913 the first building was built in Shishigatani, Kyoto, and named Ittoen. Later, the foundation of the facility today was laid in Yamashina. Currently, about 3,000 "doujin" live here communally, working in printing, publishing, construction, agriculture, and other fields, and practicing a life of service by cleaning the toilets of others' homes. The organization also has educational facilities from nursery school to university, and actively participates in international religious exchange.
