A discriminatory term for people who were classified as outcasts in the early modern shogunate-han system's social class system. Written in kanji as "eta," it has been seen since the Kamakura period, but it was officially used by the Edo shogunate and various feudal domains, and the term spread nationwide from the late 17th century to the 18th century due to the strengthening of social class control measures. In 1871, the Meiji government issued the "Dajokan Proclamation (Emancipation Edict)," abolishing the early modern outcast system and the terms "eta" and "hinin," but this did not eliminate the outcasts and discrimination, and the word "eta" in particular is still used as a derogatory term for people from discriminated communities, playing a major role in preserving and promoting discrimination. →Related items New commoner | Low-class people | Danzaemon | Discriminated Buraku groups | Buraku liberation movement | Class system Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
