Isopleth - Isopleth (English spelling)

Isopleths are the contours of a function of two variables. They are often used in meteorology and climatology. For example, if you plot observed meteorological elements on a coordinate system with time on the horizontal axis and spatial scales such as altitude, longitude, and latitude on the vertical axis, and draw isopleths on the system, you can see the structure of atmospheric disturbances (high pressure, low pressure, fronts, etc.) that pass through that spatial axis. The English pronunciation is Isopleth, but Japanese weather professionals often use a name that is closer to the German pronunciation, Isoplethe.

二つの変数の関数の等値線。気象学、気候学でよく用いられる。たとえば横軸を時間軸とし、縦軸に高度、経度、緯度などの空間的尺度を刻んだ座標系に、観測された気象要素を記入し、その等値線を引くと、その空間軸を通過する大気の擾乱(じょうらん)（高気圧、低気圧、前線など）の構造がわかる。英語読みはアイソプレスだが、日本の気象関係者はドイツ語読みIsoplethe（ドイツ語）に近い呼び方をすることが多い。
