French film director. Born in Paris. After working as assistant director to J. Renoir on films such as Grand Illusion (1937), he became a director. He was active as one of the first generation of postwar French filmmakers, with his debut film, The Last Trump (1942), Don't Touch the Cash (1954), and his final film, The Hole (1960), as well as his masterpiece, The Crown of Flesh (1952), set in Paris during the Belle Époque. His other works include Designs of Happiness (1947), which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, the romantic comedy Édouard and Caroline (1951), and Lights of Montparnasse (1958), which depicts the life of painter Modigliani. His flexible and precise directing made him a pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague.

Becker

Spanish poet. He died at the age of 34, an unfortunate life. All of his less than 100 poems are collected in "Lyric Poems" (1871). In them, themes inherited from the Romantic school such as fleeting love, frustration, and loneliness are expressed in deep, almost mystical poetic language, and his profound poetic world has had an overwhelming influence on modern poets. Other works include "Legends" (1860-1863), a collection of short, fantastical prose poems based on legends, including "Pérez the Organist" and "The Green Eyes."

ベッケル

スペインの詩人。34歳で不遇の生涯を終えた。彼の100編足らずの詩作品はすべて《抒情詩集》（1871年）に収められている。そこでは，はかない愛，挫折，孤独などロマン派から引き継がれたテーマが，神秘的ともいえる奥行きのある詩語によって表現されており，その深遠な詩的世界は現代の詩人に対して圧倒的な影響力をもっている。他には伝説を題材とする幻想的な散文詩風の短編を集めた《伝説集》（1860年―1863年）があり，《オルガン弾きペレス》《緑色の瞳》などが知られている。
