French film director. Born in Paris. After working as assistant director to J. Renoir on films such as Grand Illusion (1937), he became a director. He was active as one of the first generation of postwar French filmmakers, with his debut film, The Last Trump (1942), Don't Touch the Cash (1954), and his final film, The Hole (1960), as well as his masterpiece, The Crown of Flesh (1952), set in Paris during the Belle Époque. His other works include Designs of Happiness (1947), which won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, the romantic comedy Édouard and Caroline (1951), and Lights of Montparnasse (1958), which depicts the life of painter Modigliani. His flexible and precise directing made him a pioneer of the Nouvelle Vague. → Related topics Gabin | Philip | Rivet BeckerSource : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
