During the Northern and Southern Dynasties of China, there was a debate over the superiority of Confucianism and Taoism, which are indigenous Chinese ideologies, and Buddhism, which is an imported (barbarian) ideology. A representative example is the Yi-xia Lun (Yixia Treatise) written by Gu Huan of the Southern Song Dynasty.
