Since R. Dart gave the scientific name Australopithecus africanus to the skull of an infant excavated from Taung, South Africa in 1925, many fossils have been discovered in South and East Africa. It is called the A-type ape-man after the initials of the genus name Australopithecus, or the a-type ape-man after the initials of the species name Africanus, and is also called the g-type ape-man because it is commonly known as the "delicate gracile ape-man."
