Tudor style

An English architectural style that lasted for about a century from the end of the 15th century. The name comes from the Tudor dynasty (1485-1603), which ruled England from Henry VII to Elizabeth I. It is a transitional style that combines elements of Italian and French Renaissance architecture with the perpendicular style, a later style of English Gothic architecture, and was followed by the next Elizabethan style. In church architecture, it is characterized by the use of four-centered spired arches (Tudor arches), which have a small height compared to their span. Representative works include St. George's Chapel at Windsor Palace and Henry VII's Chapel at Westminster Abbey. In secular architecture, the Great Hall at Hampton Court Palace and Queen's College in Cambridge are also called Tudor style. Half-timbered wooden houses with wooden frameworks filled with bricks and plaster are also called Tudor style.

15世紀末から約1世紀続いたイギリスの建築様式。この名称は、ヘンリー7世からエリザベス1世までイギリスを支配したチューダー朝（1485～1603）に由来する。イギリス・ゴシック建築の後期の様式であるパーペンディキュラー（垂直式）に、イタリアやフランスのルネサンス建築の要素が加わった過渡的様式であり、次のエリザベス様式に続く。教会建築では、スパンのわりに張りの高さの小さい、四心尖塔(せんとう)アーチ（チューダー・アーチ）の使用が特徴で、代表的作品としてウィンザー宮のセント・ジョージ礼拝堂、ウェストミンスター寺院のヘンリー7世礼拝堂などがある。世俗建築では、ハンプトン・コート宮の大ホール、ケンブリッジのクイーンズ・カレッジなどがある。なお、木の骨組をれんがや漆食(しっくい)で埋めたハーフ・ティンバー式木造住宅もチューダー式とよばれる。
