Lascaux (English spelling)
Lascaux is a Paleolithic cave site near Montignac in the Dordogne department in southern France. It was discovered by chance in 1940 by local boys searching for a dog that had fallen into a hole. The cave paintings left there are the most famous Paleolithic paintings in Franco-Cantabrian art, along with the Altamira cave paintings, and feature wild horses, cattle, sheep, and goats, colorfully painted in black, red, yellow, and brown. In addition, there were about 500 painted and engraved drawings, including animals shot with arrows and a human (a simple human body with a bird's head) attacked by a wild buffalo. The cave consists of three parts, the main cave, a subsidiary cave, and an inner cave, and is believed to have been painted in the Aurignacian (→Aurignacian culture) and Magdalenian (→Madalenian culture) periods. It was open to the public for a while after its discovery, but was closed due to severe damage from mold, and a replica was later opened to the public as a "Second Lascaux." In 1979, it was registered as a World Heritage Site along with the surrounding ruins.
