Golden birdwing

A butterfly belonging to the order Lepidoptera, family Papilionidae. It was well known in Japan even before World War II as a large, gorgeous butterfly found in Taiwan, and is found in the southern and east coast of Taiwan. This species is further distributed in China (central and southern), the Malay Peninsula, Thailand, Myanmar (Burma), and the Himalayan region. Its wingspan is about 105-125 mm. Its forewings are black, while its hindwings shine golden. Its larvae feed on plants from the family Aristolochiaceae. There is only one species of Troides , a member of the swallowtail family, found in Taiwan and China, but there are over a dozen species in Southeast Asia, mainly in the Sunda Islands.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目アゲハチョウ科に属するチョウ。台湾に産する大形の華麗チョウとして第二次世界大戦前から日本によく知られていたチョウで、台湾では南部と東海岸に産する。この種はさらに中国（中南部）、マレー半島、タイ、ミャンマー（ビルマ）、ヒマラヤ地方にかけて分布する。はねの開張105～125ミリメートル程度。前ばねは黒色、後ろばねは黄金色に輝く。幼虫の食草はウマノスズクサ科植物。キシタアゲハの仲間であるトロイデス属Troidesは台湾や中国ではわずか1種にすぎないが、スンダ列島を中心に東南アジアに十数種を産する。
