Medieval European music. This covers music in Western Europe from the early 4th century, when the Roman emperor officially recognized Christianity, to the 14th century, when Christianity's authority began to waver. In the history of Western music, the period from roughly 850 to 1150 is sometimes called the Romanesque period, and the period from 1150 to 1450 is called the Gothic period. There is also a fairly widespread practice, though much debate today, of calling the 13th century the period of Ars Antica (old technique) and the 14th century the period of Ars Nova (new technique).
