The 1936 arrest of researchers from the Lecture Series. With the publication of the "Lecture Series on the Development History of Japanese Capitalism" (1932-33), the debate on Japanese capitalism over the nature of the Meiji Restoration and the landlord system became heated. In light of this debate, the editors of the Lecture Series, Yamada Moritaro and Hirano Yoshitaro, and the authors Kobayashi Ryomasa and Aikawa Haruki, among others, began planning the publication of "Lecture Series on Japanese Feudalism" at the end of 1934, with the aim of clarifying the semi-feudal nature of Japanese society, and they also conducted joint research in preparation for writing the book.

1936年の講座派研究者に対する検挙事件。《日本資本主義発達史講座》の刊行(1932‐33)にともない，明治維新や地主制の性格をめぐる日本資本主義論争は白熱化した。この論争を踏まえて日本社会の半封建的性格を究明しようとする立場から，同講座の編集者であった山田盛太郎，平野義太郎，執筆者であった小林良正，相川春喜らが中心となって，1934年末から〈日本封建制講座〉刊行の企画が進められ，執筆準備のための共同研究も行われていた。
