A perennial plant of the Onagraceae family that grows in wet and marshy areas in the mountains and fields throughout Japan. Stems 30-60 cm tall grow upright from horizontal underground stems. The stems are branched and have fine hairs. The leaves are opposite, ovate-oblong, and serrated on the edges. In summer, it produces pale red-purple flowers with four petals. The flowers have no stalk, but the lower ovary is elongated and looks like a stalk. The same genus, Eupatorium angustifolium, grows to a height of 80-150 cm and has alternate leaves. It produces racemes at the top of the stem, with many beautiful red-purple flowers. It can form large colonies after forest fires. There are many other species in the same genus, such as Eupatorium nigra, Eupatorium nigra, and Eupatorium nigra.
