A small radio transmitter that has been developed in recent years is a device that attaches a detector, transmitter, and antenna to the body of a wild animal and receives radio waves to remotely monitor the animal's location, movement, behavior such as chewing and heart rate, and physiological state. It is widely used in research on the ecology and behavior of wild animals, and is particularly effective in analyzing the movements and population densities of animals that are difficult to track visually, such as nocturnal animals and animals that live in forests, and wild animals that are dangerous to approach, as well as tracking long-distance migratory birds.

近年開発が進められた小型の電波発信機で，野生動物の体に検出器，送信機，アンテナを取りつけ，その受信電波によって動物の位置，動きのほか，そしゃく，心拍などの行動や生理状態をも遠隔傍受する装置をいう。野生動物の生態学や行動学的な研究に広く用いられ，とくに夜行性の動物や森林に生息する動物など視覚による追跡の困難な動物や，接近に危険を伴う猛獣の移動や個体群密度などの解析，あるいは渡り鳥のような長距離移動をするものの追跡にも有効である。
