Personal counseling is a one-on-one, individualized consultation on an individual's personal problems. It is also called "life counseling." It has the function of providing knowledge of psychology, society, law, education, psychiatry, social welfare, etc., which is useful in solving problems, as well as information on social resources, and the function of deepening problem and self-insight through a direct or indirect relationship based on trust with the respondent. Unlike religions that promise absolute salvation or legal judgment, personal counseling is unique in that it is assistance provided by an equal human being.

個人の一身上の問題につき，1対1の関係を通してなされる個別的な相談。〈人生相談〉ともいう。問題の解決に役だつ，心理，社会，法律，教育，精神医学，社会福祉などの知識や，社会資源についての情報を提供する機能と，回答者との直接･間接的な信頼に基づく関係の中で，問題および自己洞察を深める機能をもっている。絶対的な救いを約束する宗教や，法律による裁きとは異なり，対等な人間によってなされる援助であるところに身上相談の独自性がある。
