A term for sculpture. From the Italian, it means intaglio, concave, or sunken carving. It refers to stones with engraved details, as opposed to cameos, which are carved in relief. There are many examples of cylinder-shaped seals in the ancient Orient, and ring-shaped seals continue to be made to this day. In the art of printing, the method of applying intaglio engraving to a block is called intaglio or intaglio print, and the etching technique is a typical example.
