Chanchanko

Japanese:
Chanchanko

A sleeveless, cotton-padded haori for children. It has a single width at the back with gussets at the sides, a folded collar like that of a haori, and a string made of the same fabric as the outer layer, with cotton filling and decorative thread attached to the end of the string. The standard length is 50 centimeters. The body is lined with cotton (Oume cotton), and can be worn for a wide range of purposes to protect against the cold. The outer layer can be made of rinzu, Fuji silk, muslin, cotton fabric, synthetic fabric, etc. Cute patterns and colors are selected for each boy and girl. Thin habutae or thin moss is used for the lining. The color is white for both boys and girls, pale blue for boys, pale pink for girls, etc. For girls, the collar may be a hifu collar with lace or finely folded pleats tucked into it. There is a custom of wearing a red sleeveless haori coat to celebrate one's 60th birthday, which is also called "chanchanko." This has a wide crotch and a stand-up collar in the style of a hanten coat. In recent years, this custom has fallen out of favor. Also, in rural areas, it is still worn by adults today because it has no sleeves, making it functional for working activities, easy to put on and take off, and easy to layer.
