A city in the eastern part of West Bengal state in northeastern India. Also known as Chandernagore. Located about 35 km north of Kolkata (Calcutta), on the west bank of the Hooghly River. Founded by the French in 1673, the French East India Company established a trading post there in 1692, competing with the British power in Calcutta. In 1757, it was occupied by the British East India Company forces led by Robert Clive, but was returned to France in 1816 and became the center of French trade in the East Indies. It was returned to India in 1949 after Indian independence. The jute industry is thriving. There are several colleges of Burdwan University. Population 162,166 (2001).
