Tribonianus

By order of the emperor, a compilation committee led by Tribonianus selected works by classical jurists and arranged them by subject for the convenience of legal education and judicial practice. With the exception of a few public law provisions, most of the contents are private law, and it is the core of the Corpus Juris Civilis along with the Codex. It is the most important source of information on classical law, but it should be noted that the copies of the works of classical jurists used by the committee may have been modified in the process of transmission, and that the emperor ordered the committee to remove contradictions between the texts and make necessary changes to the current law (the modifications made in this way are called the "modifications of Tribonianus"). …

…ラテン語でディゲスタDigesta，ドイツ語ではパンデクテンという。帝の命によりトリボニアヌスTribonianusを中心とする編纂委員会が，法学教育ならびに裁判実務の便宜のために，古典期法学者の著作から抜粋しそれぞれの題目ごとにまとめて配列したもので，若干の公法的規定を除き，大部分は私法的内容であり，勅法彙纂Codexと並びローマ法大全の核心をなす。古典法を知る資料として最も重要であるが，委員会が利用した古典期法学者の著作の写本自体が既に伝承の過程で修正を被っていたことがありうること，および，帝が委員会に対し，法文間の矛盾を除去し，また，現行の法として必要な変更を加えることを命じている(これにより加えられた修正interpolatioを〈トリボニアヌスの修正〉という)ことに留意しなければならない。…
