It is a form of rhythm in popular music. It is usually performed using a güiro (a Cuban percussion instrument made by rubbing wire brushes on the tough skin of a gourd-shaped fruit with notches) and is said to have been named after the cha-cha-cha rhythm. It was created by Cuban violinist and orchestra conductor Enrique Jorrín, who improved on the Cuban dance danzón that was popular from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, and became popular worldwide in the mid-1950s.
