...Gradually spreading throughout the country, they eventually formed the Kilkenny League (1642) under the leadership of the Catholic clergy, demanding religious freedom, self-government, and the restoration of their lost lands. Under the command of Owen Roe O'Neill, they often won battles, but were unable to subjugate the whole country, and were almost completely suppressed by Cromwell in 1649-50. Exaggerated reports that 154,000 Protestants had been massacred by March 1642 provided Cromwell with an excuse for the massacre of the Irish.
