Venus-shaped shield clam

It is a bivalve mollusca of the family Veneridae in the class Bivalvia of the phylum Mollusca. In Japan, it is found throughout the Pacific Ocean south of the Boso Peninsula and the Sea of ​​Japan south of Yamagata Prefecture, even reaching Taiwan. It inhabits the fine sandy bottom of shallow seas, and its shell is 50 mm long and 37 mm high, triangular and weakly bulging. The shell surface is white or gray-blue with usually 3-4 dark blue radial bands running from the apex, and fine spots all over. These colors change to brown when boiled. The inside is white, and the meat is delicious. A similar species, G. meleaagris , is slightly larger and found as far as Hokkaido, and is also edible.

軟体動物門二枚貝綱マルスダレガイ科の二枚貝。日本では太平洋側は房総半島以南、日本海側は山形県以南の全土に分布し、台湾まで分布する。浅海の細砂底にすみ、殻長50ミリメートル、殻高37ミリメートルになり、三角形状で膨らみは弱い。殻表は白色ないし灰青色の地に、殻頂から通常3～4本の濃青色の放射色帯が走り、また全体に細かい斑(はん)がある。これらの色は煮ると褐色に変わる。内面は白く、肉は美味である。近似種のコタマガイG. meleaagrisはやや大形で北海道まで分布し、これも食用にされる。
