Karikachi Pass

Japanese:
Karikachi Pass

A pass in the Hidaka Mountains in central-southern Hokkaido. It is 644 meters above sea level. Its name comes from its location on the border between Ishikari Province and Tokachi Province. National Route 38 crosses the Hidaka Mountains, an artery of transportation connecting eastern and western Hokkaido. In 1907 (Meiji 40), the Karikachi Tunnel (953 meters long) was dug under the pass, and the JNR Kushiro Line (now part of the JR Furano Line and Nemuro Main Line) was opened. It was known for the vast view it offered when passing through to the Tokachi side. Later, in order to ease the steep gradient of 20 to 25 thousandths and the sharp curves, construction of the new Karikachi Tunnel (5,647 meters long) began about 4 kilometers south of the pass in 1962, and was completed in 1966. The maximum gradient is 12/1000. The view from the tunnel is gone, but you can see the Tokachi Plain from the observation deck at the pass.
