…When the British Publishers Association (a small private association, but the most authoritative body in the book profession) sent a delegation of publishers and book dealers to Germany and Holland in 1926 to inspect the state of publishing after the First World War, Unwin was the head of the delegation, which wrote an excellent report, and as a result, a cooperative committee was formed in England to bring publishers and book dealers closer together. Unwin also set up the National Book Conference in London in 1924, which developed into the National Book League, the influential organization that unites publishers, book dealers, and readers. Although the Second World War brought about devastations incomparable to those of the First World War, and the damage suffered by Britain was devastating, it was due to Unwin's good handling that the British publishing industry was spared the same damage as it had suffered in the First World War. …
