Edith Nesbit

A British female author. Born in London, she spent her childhood in France and Germany. She began writing poetry in her teens, and after marrying Brand, one of the founders of the Fabian Society, she worked in a variety of genres to support herself, but she is best remembered for her children's literature, which accounts for half of her approximately 100 books. Her first important work was The Children Who Hunted for Treasure (1899), which Andrew Lang described as "an entirely new and original adventure story." Alongside her series of adventure stories set in reality, she also wrote a humorous fantasy that mixed reality and fantasy, The Sand Fairies (1902), and many other long and short fantasies, which led to her being considered the mother of 20th century British children's literature and influenced many other authors.

イギリスの女流作家。ロンドンに生まれ、幼時をフランスやドイツで過ごす。10代から詩作を始め、フェビアン協会の創立者の一人ブランドと結婚後は、生計を支えるためさまざまなジャンルで仕事をしたが、約100冊に及ぶ著作の半数を占める児童文学によって記憶される作家となる。最初の重要な作品は『宝探しの子どもたち』（1899）で、アンドリュー・ラングは「全く新しい独創的な冒険物語」と評した。現実のなかに展開する冒険物語の系列と並んで、現実と非現実を混合したユーモラスなファンタジー『砂の妖精(ようせい)』（1902）そのほか多くの長・短編のファンタジーを書いたことから、20世紀のイギリス児童文学の母胎とみなされ、多くの作家に影響を与えた。
