Tan'an Chiden

Japanese: 単庵智伝 - たんあん・ちでん

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A painter of the late Muromachi period. According to "Tohaku Gasetsu" by Hasegawa Tohaku, a painter of the Momoyama period, he was the son of a vessel painter in Amagasaki, became an apprentice to Soami, and died at the age of 25 or 26 in a fight related to "wakadori" (male homosexuality). When he became an apprentice to Soami, he asked his parents for a long chest to store his "ehon" (illustration models), an interesting anecdote that shows that his works were based on the picture books of the time. Many of his surviving works, such as "Sagi" (Herring) (Tokyo National Museum), faithfully follow Soami's style, but there are also dynamic masterpieces such as "Dragon and Tiger Screen" (Jihoin Temple) that are directly linked to the Momoyama period style. <References> Minamoto Toyomune, "Tohaku Gasetsu Koshu"

室町後期の画家。桃山時代の画家長谷川等伯の『等伯画説』によれば,尼崎の器物絵描きの子で,相阿弥に弟子入りし,25,6歳で「若道事」(男色)にまつわるけんかのために死んだという。相阿弥に弟子入りする際,「絵本」(絵の手本)を蓄えるための長櫃を親に所望したという逸話は,当時の画本に基づく制作を示すエピソードとして興味深い。現存作品には,「鷺図」(東京国立博物館蔵)のような相阿弥の作風を忠実に踏襲したものが多いが,「竜虎図屏風」(慈芳院蔵)のような桃山時代様式に直結するダイナミックな大作もある。<参考文献>源豊宗『等伯画説考註』
