Vaginal bacteria

Japanese: 腟杆菌 - ちつかんきん

A non-pathogenic, large, gram-positive bacillus that normally resides in the vagina of healthy adult women. It is also called Döderlein's bacillus. It is a type of lactobacillus and is thought to be the same species as Lactobacillus acidophilus . Vaginal bacillus produces lactic acid, keeps the vagina acidic, and inhibits the growth of pathogenic and other germs that invade the vagina, keeping it clean and healthy. This is called the vagina's self-cleaning function.

健康な成人女子の腟内に常住する非病原性･大型のグラム陽性杆菌。デーデルライン杆菌Döderlein’s bacillusとも呼ばれる。乳酸杆菌の一種で，ラクトバチルス･アシドフィルスLactobacillus acidophilusと同種の菌であると考えられている。腟杆菌は乳酸を産生し，腟内を酸性に保ち，腟内に侵入してくる病原菌や雑菌の発育を抑制して，腟を清浄かつ健康に保っている。これは腟の自浄作用と呼ばれている。
