Seiichi Mizuno

Born: March 24, 1905 in Kobe
Died May 25, 1971. Kyoto archaeologist, Doctor of Literature. Graduated from the Department of History, Faculty of Literature, Kyoto Imperial University. A researcher at the Kyoto Institute of Oriental Culture, he later became a professor at the Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University. His field of expertise was Chinese archaeology, but he also excavated and investigated ruins abroad, making him a pioneer in overseas archaeological research in Japan. His main achievements include investigations of the ruins of Buddhist rock-cut temples in China, such as Yungang, Longmen, and Kyodoyama, investigations on Tsushima and Iki, and excavations of ruins related to Gandhara Buddhist art in Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. His books include "Inner Mongolia and the Great Wall Region" (1935, co-authored with Egami Namio), "Studies on the Longmen Grottoes" (41, co-authored with Nagahiro Toshio), "Yungang Grottoes" (51-56, same author), "Yin and Zhou Bronzes and Jade" (59), "Haibak and Kashmir Smasth" (62), and "Buddhist Art in China" (68).

考古学者，文学博士。京都帝国大学文学部史学科卒業。東方文化学院京都研究所研究員，のちに，京都大学人文科学研究所教授。専門の分野は中国考古学であるが，もっぱら外国の遺跡について，発掘，調査を行い，日本における海外考古学調査の草分け的存在であった。おもな業績は，雲崗，竜門，響堂山などの中国の仏教石窟寺院址の調査，対馬，壱岐の調査，イラン，アフガニスタン，パキスタンのガンダーラ仏教美術関係遺跡の発掘などである。著書として『内蒙古・長城地帯』 (1935，江上波夫と共著) ，『竜門石窟の研究』 (41，長広敏雄と共著) ，『雲崗石窟』 (51～56，同) ，『殷周青銅器と玉』 (59) ，『ハイバクとカシュミール＝スマスト』 (62) ，『中国の仏教美術』 (68) などがある。
