Japanese: 歌祭文 - うたざいもん

〘noun〙 A type of popular song performed in early modern times. It is used to distinguish it from the original religious ritual songs that were turned into performing arts. It started with mountain ascetics waving shakujo (a shakujo staff ) and blowing conch shells to talk about the miraculous powers of gods and Buddhas, and later came to include poems about everyday happenings and customs, accompanied by shamisen. The format is to begin with "I will purify you" or "I respectfully submit" and end with "I respectfully submit." A ritual song. 〘名〙近世に行なわれた俗曲の一種。本来の宗教上の祭文に対して芸能化したものを区別していう。修験山伏(やまぶし)の徒が、錫杖(しゃくじょう)を振り、法螺貝(ほらがい)を吹いて、神仏の霊験などを語ったのに始まり、後には市井の事件や風俗を詠み込み、三味線を伴奏とするようになった。「祓(はら)ひ清め奉る」または「敬って申し奉る」に始まり、「敬って申す」に終わるのが型である。祭文節。祭文。※俳諧・誹枕（1680）下「出し月道の果なる常陸坊〈幽山〉哥祭文を呼坂の秋〈露沾〉」
