Calceola - Calceola

Japanese:
Calceola - Calceola

A genus of the Goniophyllum family of the Tetracorallia subclass. They live singly, not in colonies. The coral body is shaped like an inverted front half of a pointed slipper, with one side flat and the other curved, forming an almost semicircular cross section. Due to this shape, it is also called slipper coral. It is characterized by a semicircular operculum on top. The coral body is generally less than 5 cm in length. It lives from the early to middle Devonian period of the Paleozoic era, and is found all over the world except America, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. In Japan, coral bodies and operculums have been found in the Devonian strata of Okuhida Onsengo Fukuji, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, and the Kitakami Mountains, but the numbers are small.
