Sojo Ito

...An essay written in the early modern period. A book of conversations by Confucian physician Emura Sensai (1565-1664) transcribed and edited by his disciple Ito Tan'an (Sojo). Two volumes. It is a collection of stories about military commanders from the Warring States period to the early modern period, military affairs, literature, medicine, Noh, tea ceremony, and the geography of Kyoto, written in eloquent prose. The stories about Toyotomi Hideyoshi in particular are outstanding, but it cannot be said that all of them are necessarily true. As an essay, it is an excellent piece. The printed version is included in the Revised Historical Documents Collection, the Selections of Essay Literature, and the Continued Miscellaneous History of the National Library. ...
