Nephthea chabrolii (Shrunk Cockscomb)

Japanese: チヂミトサカ(縮鶏冠) - チヂミトサカ（英語表記）Nephthea chabrolii

A coelenterate (Cnidaria) of the family Polytrichum commune in the class Anthozoa. It is found in a wide range of warm seas, from south of the Kii Peninsula to the Indian Ocean, where it grows on rocks at depths of 5 to 20 meters. It forms light brown, dendritic colonies 5 to 10 cm tall. The main trunk has several branches, which branch out into small branches around which club-shaped polyps grow in clusters, which is the main characteristic of this species. The polyps are less than 1 mm in length and width, do not retract, and have spindle-shaped bone fragments arranged in vertical rows. It is one of the animals that color the warm seas.

花虫綱チヂミトサカ科の腔腸動物(刺胞動物)。紀伊半島以南からインド洋までの暖海に広く分布し，水深5～20mの岩石に着生する。高さ5～10cmの淡褐色の樹枝状群体をつくる。主幹から数本の枝が出，それらがいくつにも分岐してできた小枝の周囲に棍棒状のポリプが総状についているが，これがこの種の大きな特徴である。ポリプは長さ，幅ともに1mm以下で退縮せず，紡錘状の骨片が縦列に並んでいる。暖海を彩る動物の一つ。
