This clan ruled the area around Tanagura, Shirakawa County, Mutsu Province (Tanagura Town, Higashi Shirakawa County, Fukushima Prefecture). It had been under the control of the Hitachi Satake clan since the Sengoku period, but in 1602 (Keicho 7) it became a Shogunate territory, and in 1603 Tachibana Muneshige entered the domain, establishing this clan. In 1622 (Genwa 8), Niwa Nagashige was appointed to a fief of 50,000 koku from Furuwatari, Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture), and in 1624 (Kan'ei 1), Nagashige built Kamega Castle (Chikatsu Castle, Tanagura Castle), invited merchants from the Kamigata region to develop the castle town, and established control over the castle town of Tanagura and the local villages, making local lords local samurai, inspectors, village headmen, etc. In 1627, when Nagashige was transferred to Shirakawa, Naito Nobuteru entered the domain and was given a fief of 50,000 koku. In June 1629, Gyokushitsu Sohaku, who was involved in the Shie Incident, was placed in Tanagura. The Naito clan carried out a general land survey of the domain in 1647 (Shoho 4), and the third lord, Kazunobu, appointed Matsunami Kanjuro, a ronin from Kyoto, to reform the domain's government in order to improve the domain's financial situation. In 1705 (Hoei 2), Ota Sukeharu replaced the Naito clan, and thereafter the domain saw a rapid succession of lords, from Matsudaira (Ochi), Ogasawara, Inoue, Matsudaira (Matsui), and Abe. In the Boshin War of 1868 (1st year of the Meiji era), Abe Masakiyo participated in the Oshu League of Feudal Domains and fought a fierce battle with the Western Army at the mouth of Shirakawa, and Tanagura Castle fell to the Western Army. In December 1868, Abe Masakoto succeeded him, and Tanagura Domain was abolished with the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, and Tanagura Prefecture was established. It became Taira Prefecture and Iwasaki Prefecture, and was incorporated into Fukushima Prefecture in 1876.
