He was from the Tegai school in Yamato (Nara Prefecture). He moved to Shizu, Tagi County, Mino (Gifu Prefecture) and founded the Shizu school. He was one of the Ten Philosophers of Masamune, and one of his later works bears the date 1343. His original name was Tsuneuji. He was commonly known as Shizu Saburo.
