Nha Trang (English spelling)

The capital of Khanh Hoa Province in south-central Vietnam. It is a port city facing the South China Sea, located about 320 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, on the south bank of the mouth of the Cai River. Although the port facilities are relatively small, it is an important fishing port along the South China Sea and is known as a seaside resort with beautiful sandy beaches. The city is home to the Pasteur Institute and the Vietnam Academy of Oceanography, both built during the French colonial period, and on the opposite bank of the Cai River is the Po Nagar Temple, built by the Cham people about 1,000 years ago. It is also famous as a place to collect petrel nests. In July 1941, Japanese troops landed in the southern part of French Indochina. National Highway 1 and the Thong Nhat Railway run through the city, connecting the capital Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Population: 213,687 (1989).

ベトナム中南部，カインホア省の省都。ホーチミン市の東北東約 320km，南シナ海にのぞむ港湾都市で，カイ川の河口部南岸に位置する。港湾施設は比較的小規模であるが，南シナ海沿岸の重要な漁港であり，また美しい砂浜をもつ海浜保養地として知られる。市内にはフランス統治時代に建てられたパスツール研究所やベトナム海洋学研究院があり，カイ川の対岸には約 1000年前にチャム族が建設したポ・ナガル寺院が保存されている。ウミツバメの巣の採取地としても有名。 1941年7月，南部「仏印」進駐をはかる日本軍が上陸した。首都ハノイとホーチミン市を結ぶ国道1号線とトンニャット鉄道が通る。人口 21万 3687 (1989) 。
