Toshisada Endo - Toshisada Endo

A mathematics historian from the Meiji period. Born in Kuwana, Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). His real surname was Horio, and he was adopted by the Endo clan of the Ise Domain. He studied Japanese mathematics under Hosoi Wakasa, and was briefly a mathematics teacher at the domain school in Kuwana. In 1872 (Meiji 5), he moved to Tokyo to study Western mathematics, and in the same year became a teacher of Western mathematics. From then until his death, he made a living as a mathematics teacher at many schools. In 1878, he decided to write a history of Japanese mathematics, and completed the manuscript in 1893, which was published in 1896 as "Dai Nippon Suugakushi." He continued to expand and revise this book, and after his death, it was published as "Zoshu Nippon Suugakushi" edited by Mikami Yoshio, and in 1960 (Showa 35), the third edition was published, edited by Hirayama Akira (1904-1998).

明治時代の数学史家。伊勢(いせ)国（三重県）桑名の出身。本姓を堀尾といい、伊勢藩遠藤氏の養子となる。細井若狭(わかさ)について和算を学び、一時、桑名の藩校の数学教師にもなったことがある。1872年（明治5）東京に出て洋算を学び、同年に洋算の教師となった。以後、没するまで多くの学校で数学の教師として生活をたてる。1878年和算史の著述を志し、1893年に脱稿、1896年『大日本数学史』として出版された。彼はその後もこの書の増補改訂を続け、没後は三上義夫の編集で『増修日本数学史』として刊行され、1960年（昭和35）には平山諦(ひらやまあきら)（1904―1998）の編集で同書の第3版が発行された。
