...A picture depicting a secret love affair between a man and a woman. In the past, it was called "Osokuzu (a picture of a woman breathing)" or "Okoe (a picture of a fool or a fool)" and was also called "Makura-e" (pillow picture), "Makura no Soshi" (pillow book), "Kachi-e" (victory picture), "Ehon" (a book), "Enpon" (erotic book), "Higashi-ga" (secret picture), "Higaki-ga" (secret picture), "Wajirushi (seal)" or "Warai-e" (laughing picture). Rather than a picture of an obvious secret love affair, erotic pictures showing naked women, such as bathing scenes, were distinguished by being called "Abuna-e" (dangerous pictures). As the "Kokin Chomonshu" (Collected Books of Ancient Times) writes, "Osokuzu pictures drawn by the masters of the past," the history of shunga by professional artists is quite old, and in the Middle Ages, masterpieces of picture scrolls such as "Koshibagaki-zoshi" (13th century) and "Chigo-zoshi" (14th century, late Kamakura period) were produced. *Some of the terminology used in reference to the "Picture of the Rest" is listed below. …
